What is Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)?
BHRT has existed for over 20 years. One of the major benefits of BHRT is that treatment doses are highly individualized and the mixture of products are not commercially available.
Bio-identical Hormones, sometimes referred to as natural hormones, are used to treat the symptoms related to menopause, perimenopause, and post-menopause. BHRT is also used to treat certain symptoms in men due to low testosterone levels ('male menopause').
Bio-identical Hormones are those that are molecularly identical to the hormones that are produced in the body.
These hormones are chemicals that are derived from sources of animals and plants, then altered to be identical in molecular structure to those that naturally occur in the human body.
The hormones are then formed as a cream, gel, oral lozenge, suppository, or injection so the body can quickly absorb them and utilize them more effectively.
Bio-identical hormone replacement is much different from synthetic hormone replacement in that bio-identical hormones are metabolized, stored, and converted into other hormones naturally.
There are many fewer side effects associated with bio-identical hormone replacement therapy because the hormones are natural. Our bodies metabolize bio-identical hormones the way they are designed to. Synthetic hormones can often be quite strong and produce unpleasant to unbearable side effects.
The compounded bio-identical hormones can be compounded to match each person's individual needs. This is something that's just not possible with commercially produced, synthetic products.
